SPECIAL ITEMS FROM THE SPORTS MUSEUM FOUNDATION’S COLLECTIONS
The effort to expand the collections of Finnish sports and physical activity heritage began in 1925 when Toivo Okkola launched the actual initiative to establish the Sports Museum. This eventually led to the founding of the Finnish Sports Museum Foundation in the 1930s. Over the course of a hundred years, the Foundation’s collections have grown into a unique and invaluable cross-section of Finnish society through the lens of sports and physical activity across different eras. The Treasures of TAHTO exhibition showcases a selection from the collection, presented from twenty different perspectives.
Our unique museum collections include 36,000 objects and 500,000 photographs. Our library is one of the largest sport libraries in the world, containing 30,000 books and thousands of volumes of magazines. The archives contain more than 2,000 shelf metres of documents from sports organisations, clubs and private individuals. All this constitutes the national collection of Finnish sport.
