The upper gallery of TAHTO’s main hall is now dedicated to Lauri Markkanen. Our new special exhibition brings to life the unique story of the 27-year-old Finnish basketball superstar, who realized his great dream through hard work and passion.

Exhibition made in co-operation with Lauri Markkanen’s family

Lauri Markkanen announced his huge talent when he played in the Finnish team at the European Under-18 and Under-20 Championships in 2015 and 2016. After playing one season in US college basketball he was drafted to the NBA, the world’s best basketball league, with the seventh pick in 2017. In February 2023 Markkanen became the first Nordic player named to the NBA All-Star game.  He was also won the Athlete of the Year award in Finland in 2023.

TAHTO’s new exhibition shows the important part that Markkanen’s actively athletic family played in his childhood and formative years, as well as what later has happened during his professional career. On display are objects, film clips and pictures that relate to Markkanen’s career and life, such as his childhood backyard play basketball and his NBA All-Star Game jersey.

LAURI MARKKANEN – The First Finnish NBA Star exhibition is open at TAHTO Center for Finnish Sports Culture at the Olympic Stadium from 19 June 2024 to 6 January 2025.

Lauri Markkanen got to know the exhibition made of him in June and was satisfied with the execution.
